So… I started a Patreon. Earning a living as a writer is difficult. I’ve had more success on Medium than most, but it’s difficult to earn steadily on the platform. I’m committed to eking out more than a starvation living as a writer, and I think moving towards a place where everyone — creators included — can find ways to be compensated fairly for their work is necessary. I’ve been mulling over ways to do this, and setting up a Patreon account seemed like a good next step.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, Patreon is a crowdfunding site that helps creators get paid for their work. Patrons sign up and make pledges to their favorite creators. I really enjoy producing the work I do and hope to produce more in-depth pieces that take more research or maybe even a bit of travel. I’m hoping to grow my Patreon account enough to make this a real possibility.
I’ll be creating essays on Patreon. Some will be longer-form pieces that I’ll share with my patrons first then post on Medium. The core of the project will be essay series about topics I’m struggling to gain more understanding of. The first essay series will be about my ongoing education on fascism and authoritarianism. I want my patrons to help shape the direction of the series and will poll them and solicit other feedback.
If you’ve enjoyed my work on Medium, I hope you’ll check out my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron!
