I’ve never been very good at being proud of my accomplishments. I don’t celebrate my victories, so this post is a bit of a departure for me. This is the 100th story I’ve written for this account, and I’m still surprised by the positive reactions some of my stories have received.
I first posted to this account on May 6. It was in the aftermath of the Kanye West “slavery was a choice” fiasco. I wrote about it.
Kanye, the Kardashians, and the Madness-Making of Chasing Whiteness
Kanye West desperately wants to transcend his Blackness, and his inability to do so may be driving him mad.
I’d only just launched the account, so the piece didn’t get very many views or reads, but I was pleased it received any at all.
I posted the article that changed things for me the next day. Childish Gambino had just released This is America, and it was all anyone was talking about. I wrote up my take but almost didn’t hit “publish” because I wasn’t sure I had anything to add to the discussion. Instead of binning it, I posted. One of Medium’s editors liked the piece and got in touch with me to ask if they could feature it. I jumped at the opportunity, and I’ve been on a pretty good run since then.
The Difficulty in Defining Donald Glover’s ‘This is America’
It’s powerful, problematic, and its motives are unclear
Some of my most successful pieces have been the ones I’ve doubted the most. If you’re sitting on a project you’ve worked hard on and believe in but you’re hesitant about sharing it, take the plunge! You never know how it might work out.
I hope I’ll be able to share another 100 stories!
